Day 28, 27-07
Left Florence today :( had a bit of confusion at the train station, but we hopped on towards Siena. It was raining, which was a bit of a damper on our day (yesss). Our new accom was interesting… up 3 flights of stairs, Anushi runs up the stairs then back down and says “Fran! We’re staying at some guy’s house!” I love how we just haven’t looked up these things. It was super though, a pretty cute B & B (pensione – Dad). Siena was lame because of the rain, we had to shuffle around under the umbrella and force ourselves around the main centre. Spent a good hour or so in a café in hiding then came back home. In the late arvo we went out again to see the Medici fortress, which randomly turned out to be this weird jazz venue inside. It was cool to hear all this jazz being practiced from the little rooms above. Had an early dinner at La Chiacchiaria (?) recommended to us by Fabrizio (!) at the B & B. I ordered a roast leg of pork. It’s very hilarious because Italian food always comes as it is. As in, all I got was a roast leg of pork on in the middle of the plate – barely any sauce (although the flavour was Delish! Very salty and tender with rosemary), no sides, no veges or anything! So funny.. Afterwards we crossed the little road/path to Zest, another restaurant opposite for some yum dessert. Tarte de la Nonna (Nana’s recipe) – a traditional Tuscan tart made from pinenuts and lemon patisserie cream on a vanilla and lemon biscuit base. Also had a yummm freshly squeezed orange juice, and then found out the owner was from St. Helier’s NZ! Was so funny he was like, “are you from Ponsonby or Newmarket” as in that was the only two places he remembered. But it was nice.
