I was recently in Wellington and discovered the most awesome Mel-like silk fabric ever. Period. If Mel were to design a fabric I think it would be this. Anyway her burthday was soon so I decided to spin her a short sleeve shirt. And I made a fun bag to put it in. I have just woken up here.
And then I decided I was jealous of Mel having the shirt so I made one for myself. I found these awezome faceted gemstone buttons which are just the right amount of sparkle, and the bottom bit is this awesomely textured silk that I got when I was in New York. I love short sleeve shirts.

215 deena
SOOO yeah, after two months off this thing.. A lot has changed in the past two months! I still want to keep this thing alive, even though I won't have as much time now. I made my lovely friend Deena this dress for a special occasion at the end of last year. Simple and elegant and everything about it just looks so good on her!

Self take bathroom shot ftw. But the real point is, I've gone crazy over this fabric and my newly made summer shirt and shorts. The fabric is a Karen Walker light and fine silk cotton that I just got from the Global Fabrics sale. Apart from being a mare to work with (perhaps why there was so much at Global in the first place..), it's really quite special. It has a white sheen to it which in some light make the fabric look completely and softly washed out, yet under direct light reveal a sparkly metallic shimmer! It's totally bonkers.
I was really into the idea of using the strict stripes to make a well thought out minimalistic kind of shirt. No fuss. Hence short sleeves, box shaped, with a hidden button placket and square pocket that just camouflages right in. I'm obsessed with detail so everything ends in blue stripe (collar, pocket, hems). The shorts are obviously more suited to the pajama variety. But I don't care, my new day outfit is SORTED. Matching Americana is going to be so fun.
ps. anyone got a job for me?

210 what the water gave me
Beautiful tie dye fabric you may have seen on the 'boating' styles at Ruby this summer. I love how the visual is so outright explosively painterly yet also kind of mothy and subdued by the colours. An easy sleeveless shirt for summer (what summer//??????) and another cross over back top, shown off on my beautiful mannequin which was a 21st present from all my lovely architecture friends who I do not see nearly enough anymore. happy new y e a r ! I miss all my friends overseas.

206 halfway
Not quite sure why I'm still making jumpers... ./but. As a variation of my cuddly hoody of the other day I made this grey marle version with quilted detailing. The plan is for eyelets and pockets as well but I quite enjoyed the easiness of it at this stage.....

204 recycled
I made this from fabrics I scored from the Ruby sale the other day. I am so in love with the white floral mesh find - the weave is just so perfectly spaced. What's more, it's actually an old curtain/drape thing, lolz! How's that for recycling. I love how it's ended up to be this strange mix of a curtainish Asianish vintage looking mini dress.

In other news, we've been babysitting my cousin's twins the last few days. I go on and on about them. They just sooo cute.

I'm really into the idea of high fashion street wear at the moment. I made this hoody as an initial test, and the only fabric I could find to practice on was this embossed polka dot fluffy all-round goodness. Feeling pretty good about it as it was a first for testing hoods, pockets, eyelets... etc etc! Now all I need is a longer cord. Lollls.

197 bubble
A couple of recent makes. All of these materials were bought ages ago. My head is so full of ideas these days but to keep myself grounded I'm trying my hardest to use up my massive stash of 'buy but don't use' materials which I've accumulated over the years, before buying more. The top is a subtle two tone silk, they're actually much the same colour but the back is more sheer. I especially love the side view how it overlaps and curves. The skirt is a pale gold beige linen - it has a subtle metallic sheen on it which makes it shine in the light.

192 i'll be lightning
Earlier this year I attended a small pattern making class.. It didn't teach me much at all, but I got the basics to work with and ended up with an idea of how to make a princess line dress. I have been hiding this amazey chartreuse material for years now, it's DKNY silk from Global Fabrics that was too good to miss out on but I've never seemed to find a perfect use for it. Well here it is! It's all sorts of cool cos it looks like a block colour from far away but up close it has these dainty little white polka dots. My sort of jam.
Worn with my Ruby belt. And I thought it would be fun to chuck in my newest BRIGHTEST pair of shoes just in case things weren't exciting enough already. I bought them in Florence, from this amazing Italian brand called Casadei. I am obsessed with the heel shape.

189 purple waffle
This jumper I just made is the King of Comfy and just in time for this shit weather spell that has come upon us. I became infatuated with the idea of elbow slits which are perhaps the least practical feature (occasionally cold elbows) BUT it's purple waffle merino (comfy), raglan sleeved and boat necked (comfy), and big and baggy (comfy). I was so happy completing this jumper as it has lots of things involved in its making that I haven't tried before, but it all worked!

188 white light
A simple white dress, designed and made in an hour last night.. I pretty much made it up as I cut. I am a big fan of the awkward length sleeves (slash literally only enough material for this length) and the wide boat neck. The fabric was given to me, it's a little strange and a little kooky, but kinda cool. It has turned out to be quite the perfect little number for this whole in between seasons thing we've got going, and I can see it becoming a summer staple too.

183 strange nostalgia for the future
Made this shirt dress. Was planning to wear it for my birthday months ago and never finished it slash started hating on it big time! Two months away and I came back with fresh eyes and I think it's not so bad anymore. Really really old school looking, in a shade that looks like it could have been sitting in the closet for years and just rediscovered.., anyway I like how the gold buttons make it pop.
